Slab City used to be a military base full of Marines in a desert in Southern California. When the base closed down, all the buildings were demolished, but the concrete foundation slabs were left - hence the name.

Now each year it turns into a weird and wonderful, seasonal "free town" made up of thousands of motorhomes, RVs, trailers, caravans and other temporary housing. It's fair to say the Marines would be unlikely to recognise their old base.
